People familiar with the matter told NDTV Told That many major social media platforms, including Twitter, Facebook and Instagram, have not yet complied with the new intermediary rules. A Facebook spokesperson told Gadgets 360 that the company is currently in talks with the government on some issues.
However, Twitter declined to comment when contacted by Gadgets 360 and Google had not responded at the time of writing this news.
The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) and the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting (MIB) have jointly decided to ban digital platforms. on February 25 Information Technology (Intermediate Guidelines and Digital Media Ethics Code) Rules 2021 introduced. A three-month time limit was fixed for important social media intermediaries in the rules to comply with the special provisions. These intermediates include Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, WhatsApp and YouTube. This deadline is closing today ie Tuesday.
These special provisions have been placed under the Information Technology Act, 2000. According to this, the social media platform will have to appoint a Chief Compliance Officer, Nodal Contact Person and Residence Grievance Officer. Together these three will redress the grievances. Out of these, the CCO will have to work under the IT Act, 2000 and Intermediary Rules. The Nodal Officer will have to work closely with the law enforcement agencies and Grievance Officer will have to note down the complaints within 24 hours and respond to them within 15 days. It is mandatory for these three officers to be of Indian origin.
