Former President of India Pranab Pranab passed away on Monday evening at the age of 84. He was cremated with state honours on Tuesday. He was given military honours. The former president underwent brain surgery this month. He was also suffering from coronavirus. After his demise, the central government and several state governments have declared an official mourning day of seven days.
Pranab Mukherjee’s mortal remains were brought to his house in 10 Rajaji Marg, Delhi, where people are paying their last respects to him. President Ram Nath Kovind and Prime Minister Narendra Modi also arrived at the residence of the former president and paid their last respects here.
The Defence Ministry had issued a statement on Monday evening and informed about the programme during the funeral. It said that the mortal remains of the former president would be transported to the van vehicle instead of gun carriage due to the Covid-19 protocol. The funeral took take on the crematorium of Lodhi Road.
The state mourning day will be celebrated from August 31 to September 6 to honour him, the statement said. In the meantime, the national flag tricolour will be kept half-tilted in the buildings which are hoisted regularly across the country and there will be no official celebration anywhere.
