How police of Jammu and Kashmir, CRPF Army tracked down top terrorist Riyaz Naikoo from Hizb-ul-Mujahideen and killed him
Riyaz Naikoo was a top commander of Hizbul Mujahideen for eight years and had a bounty of Rs 12 lakh on his head. He was killed in an encounter in his home village in Kashmir district on 6th May 2020.
He was mobile in the terrorist group for 8 years and was tracked down and was killed by the police in Jammu and Kashmir on May 6.
He was the only commander of Hizbul who was in touch with the terror chief Salahuddin from Pakistan. The security forces deployed in the valley were monitoring Naikoo’s movement very closely and they destroyed a lot of his hideouts in the last couple of months according to intelligence bureau. According to police record, Naikoo was involved in kidnapping and murder of police personnel of Jammu and Kashmir, besides being active in terror-related activities.
How Operation Naikoo took place:
The operation was not easy for the police of Jammu and Kashmir, CRPF and Indian Army who offset the Hizbul Operational Commander in a joint encounter. The team had to use both human and technical intelligence to track the dangerous terrorist for a couple of months before killing him.
Under the guidance of Deputy Inspector General, Atul goyal formed a special team of police from Jammu and Kashmir. He had spent many years of his career in NIA before coming back to the JKP cadre. They worked quietly on the operation for a few months. Inspector General Vijay Kumar stated that for six months, they collected information on Naikoo from intelligence. The forces cleared many of his hideouts in the Valley. The teams had to work day and night barely sleeping for 2 to 3 hours a day.
The team was first told to go to Beighpora village which is in Awantipora and was joined by a force of CRPF additionally.
We were not able to find anything in Beighpora, however, we continued to seal off the area with the search operation. The terrorists who were hiding in the hole in the village opened fire on the team Force, leading to a reaction from forces,” The police mentioned.
The Security forces were able to trace down Naikoo in the area. Six bases of the Hizb-ul Mujahideen commander was destroyed after which the security forces grabbed him at the seventh. The police of Jammu and Kashmir, however, denied a media report which stated that Naikoo was found by police hiding in a tunnel while the operation was carried out.
Naikoo used to make videos which were focused on encouraging youth. “He had a special power through his speeches to affect the character of the youth and get them into terror activities, “He mentioned.
The security forces have carried out at least 27 counter-terrorism operations in the last four months by killing 64 terrorists till now including Jaish-e-Mohammad’s Qari Yasir, Burhan Kota of Ansar Ghazwat-ul-Hind and Riyaz Naikoo at last.
Police stated that they have arrested 25 active terrorists and 125 overground workers and their close group recently. They also stated that the major success was killing Lashkar commander Haider in Handwara last week. They mentioned that he was the main backbone of Lashkar-e-Toiba in north Kashmir.
