Narayan Rane: State Bureau, Mumbai. Union Minister for Medium and Small Scale Industries Narayan Rane has been arrested at Ratnagiri in Maharashtra. He has been arrested on charges of swearing at Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray.
In Maharashtra, BJP leaders met Governor Bhagat Singh Koshyari and submitted a memorandum against Rane’s arrest. Talking to reporters during the Jan Ashirvad Yatra last Monday, Rane had asked him to slap Chief Minister Thackeray.
Rane’s statement was followed by reactions from Shiv Sena workers. An FIR was lodged against them at Nashik, Pune and Mahad. His arrest had been feared since Tuesday morning. Nashik Police Commissioner Deepak Pandey issued orders for his arrest. Rane was arrested while eating in Sangameshwar area of Ratnagiri around 2.30 pm.
By evening, he was brought to the Mahad area, where he made a controversial statement. He can be produced before the Sessions Court of Mahad. Earlier, the Bombay High Court had rejected his anticipatory bail application for not being submitted lawfully.

Shiv Sena workers had started violent protests at several places in the state since Rane made controversial statements against Uddhav. Shiv Sainiks were seen hitting Rane’s effigy with slippers in several districts. In Nashik, furious Shiv Sainiks also pelted stones at the BJP office.
Police to crack out at stone pelters, says Fadnavis
State BJP President Chandrakant Patil termed the actions of Shiv Sainiks as cowardly action. Former Chief Minister and leader of opposition Devendra Fadnavis warned that bjp is capable of protecting its offices if police do not take appropriate action against stone pelters.
BJP workers block road
After Rane’s arrest, BJP workers blocked the road for several hours at Sangameshwar police station and old Mumbai-Goa highway. BJP MLA Prasad Lad and Rane MLA’s son Nitesh Rane also staged a dharna at the police station. Lad feared that the police may even get Rane killed.
Lok Sabha Speaker questions arrest without permission
Rane’s lawyer Aniket Nikam says he has been arrested illegally by maharashtra police.
– According to Nikam, there is a provision to take action by giving notice in cases punishable with imprisonment less than seven years. Rane was arrested without notice.
Rane is a Minister in the Central Government. Permission should have been sought from the Lok Sabha Speaker before his arrest. That was also not followed.

First case of minister’s arrest in Maharashtra
This is the first case of arrest of a sitting Union Minister in Maharashtra. Moreover, after nearly 20 years, a Union Cabinet Minister has been arrested. In June 2001, Murasoli Maran and TR Baalu, ministers in the then Atal Bihari Vajpayee government, were arrested by the Chennai Police.
