The government on Friday issued a notification dated December 31, 2020, the last date for filing of income tax returns for the financial year 2019-20. According to the notification, individual taxpayers can file their income tax returns by December 31. The last date for those who file income tax returns after conducting the audit will be January 31, 2021.

Sandeep Jhunjhunwala, assistant at Nangia Anderson LLP, said the government has extended the last date for filing income tax returns and audit reports. But there is still ambiguity about whether this exemption is available to corporate taxpayers whose tax audits take place.

The government has been moving forward on the deadline for filing income tax returns repeatedly since May to provide relief to taxpayers in the Quad-19 era. Earlier, the government had extended it till July 31, then November 30.
