The US arm of Volkswagen AG said a data breach at a seller affected more than 3.3 million customers and potential buyers in North America. Nearly all of those affected were current or potential customers of Audi, one of the German automaker’s luxury brands.

Volkswagen Group of America said on Friday that an unauthorized third party has obtained limited personal information about customers and interested buyers from a seller that its Audi Volkswagen brand and certain US and Canadian dealers use for digital sales and marketing. .

The leaked information collected between 2014 and 2019 for sales and marketing was in an electronic file. This file was left unsecured by the seller.
The company told regulators that most of the leaked information consisted of customer phone numbers and email addresses. In some cases, some of this data includes information such as whether a vehicle was purchased, leased or in respect of which information was obtained.

Volkswagen said 90,000 Audi customers and potential buyers had sensitive data related to purchase or lease eligibility. Volkswagen said it would provide free credit protection services to those individuals.
The sensitive data included driver’s license numbers in more than 95 percent of cases. A small number of records contained additional data such as date of birth, Social Security number and account number. The automaker believes that this sensitive information is not included in Canada. More than 31 million people have been affected in the United States.

Volkswagen believes the data was obtained at some point between August 2019 and May this year, when the automaker identified the source of the incident.
