Xiaomi overtakes Apple to become the second largest smartphone company!


Market research firm Canalys said in a report on Thursday that Xiaomi has overtaken Apple in smartphone manufacturing in the second quarter of 2021. By overtaking it, it became the world’s number 2 smartphone maker.

Canalys report According to Xiaomi, for the first time ever, it took the second place with a 17 percent share in smartphone shipments worldwide. This is an increase of 3 per cent from the previous quarter. Global smartphone shipments grew 12 percent in the second quarter. With Samsung leading the way, Samsung Electronics was at the forefront with a 19 percent share and Apple came third with a 14 percent share.

Ben Stanton, Research Manager at Canalys, said that the average selling price of Xiaomi phones is about 40 percent to 75 percent cheaper than Samsung and Apple respectively. He also said that a major priority for Xiaomi this year is to increase the sales of its high-end devices. The company’s shipments grew by more than 300 percent in Latin America, 150 percent in Africa and 50 percent in Western Europe, the report said.

According to the report, Vivo and Oppo maintained a strong growth momentum to round out the global ranking of the top five smartphone makers. Both Oppo and Vivo accounted for 10 percent of global shipments in Q2 2021 and grabbed the No. 4 and No. 5 spots respectively.

The report shows Samsung at the top posted a steady 15 percent year-on-year shipments growth. While Xiaomi’s global shipments grew by 83 percent. At the same time, there was a slight increase of 1 percent in Apple at number three. Oppo and Vivo’s shipments grew by 28 percent and 27 percent, respectively.
